On the 5th September, Madhur Day (aka Indian Holi)
celebrates the spirit of love and unity amongst all Indians. This day is
celebrated in the month of October and marks the end of the Navaratra
festivities. It is believed that Lord Buddha caused this celebration by casting
his son Jai Singh (or simply Singh) into the river Maha River in search for a
pure lady. The lady then falls in love with Jai Singh and offers him her
daughter Ashtamudi (or Savitri), who becomes his wife.
Although the story behind Madhur Day is an interesting
one, it is actually a much older tradition. On the first day of the Tamil month
of Makar, in the year-13th century, King Veeraballa travelled to the city of
Madhya Pradesh with his army. On reaching there, he presented his daughter Asha
(or Sawai) with a red dot parched in the milk from the previous day's
sacrifices. The king then offered sacrifice and departed from that spot.
On that same day, the people of Madhya Pradesh gathered
for a grand feast. However, they were not satisfied with the food given to them
as they felt that it did not speak of the greatness of their king, so in order
to cheer up their spirits, they invested money in a golden state with the net
value of 1,500 Raj at that point of time. However, when it came to Madunia's
turn to find a mate, she had no choice but to play a game of rat samadhi with
Jai Singh and other soldiers of the royal family.
The next day, they presented the same data to Asha.
However, since she was very excited to get it, she took the offer and invested
a huge amount of money in it. After many days, Asha and Jai Singh arrived at
the location of the feast and were delighted to see each other. As soon as the
news reached the royal household, a search was done in the royal archives. And
that day, it was announced to the entire world that Asha was Jai Singh's
daughter and consequently the celebration was dubbed as Madurya Kadal (madurya
means "eight daughters" in Hindi).
The story behind this satta and its origin is also
interesting. The news of Asha and Jai Singh having an affair spread like wild
fire. Therefore, the next day, a huge amount of rajdhani, which was given by
the kingdom of Madhya Pradesh, was distributed amongst all the families of the
region. There were immense happiness and joy. This was what happened on Madurya
Kadal Day.
Today, Madurya Matka is the most colourful and vibrant
state in India. There are many festivals that take place in the state. Although
Madurya is the capital of Bihar, the people of this region celebrate madhur
satta data with much more enthusiasm. On this day, there is a huge gathering of
people in the region.
