Indian Matkari (MM) or Maduroday is a festive and popular
festival in the state of Gujarat, India. This festival is celebrated on the
full moon of the Indian lunar month Shravan. On this day, all the women of the
house, along with their relatives and friends visit the local temples, for the
marriage and celebrations. Vigorous dancing, music, dance, potters and
jewellers and their gifts are the essential features of the entire day.
Matkaarosh, which is the title of the festival is dedicated to the goddess "Netra"
of Netrakashan region.
On this day, the Goddess's son, Shri Madhusudayar Jain, is born.
He is the Lord Priya and succeeds his mother Gauri (Giridars) as the next in
line to the Mother Goddess. The region called Mathura is in the Western Ghats
of Gujarat and the town of Khajuraho is famous for the erotic temples built by
the Hindu saints and Bhiksha (Bhagavat, Bhaktapur and Khajuraho) in honour of
the goddess. The major attractions of this region are the Deccan Gymnasium,
Banaras Hindu University (BHU), City Palace, Ajmer Sharif University, Khasanala
and Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal. The most famous festival of the region is
Madururya festival and people from nearby and from other parts of India
converge on this place for enjoyment and entertainment.
The Madhur Day festival is one of the biggest festivals in the
region and is celebrated at the end of the month of Makar (January-February),
which is a significant festival in the region. The celebrations include the
entire region getting together, gifts and pub are distributed and the
festivities include music, dance and fireworks. The most important highlight of
madhur day is the grand celebration that includes various activities like boat
races, elephant polo and camel race. There are some special events that take
place before the main celebrations like the kite-surfing competition and the
best golfer competition. On this day, students from all over India gather at
the City Palace to take part in the celebrations.
The first phase of the tournament starts with the first four
matches, which are held in a row. The first two matches of the day have the
best players according to the results of the previous matches and the rest of
the participants are put in the same category. The winner of the competition is
chosen by thematers vote and the matches continue until the participant who
wins the tournament is declared the winner. Matches are conducted in a special
laid-back and comfortable environment. The event is celebrated in full pomp and
show with traditional dances and music. The event ends with the drawing of lots
to determine the winner and the entire event is treated with a lot of gaiety
and joy.
During the month of January, madur Punjabi festival is
celebrated at different places in and around the region. It is one of the major
highlights of the month. On this day, different community leaders and elders to
visit their respective places and distribute sweets and invite other community
leaders for a day- celebrating the day with them. It is a time when family and
close friends to gather and participate in celebrations. The region's most
important holy day also marks the victory of good over evil.
The month of February marks the birth anniversary of the great
lady Subhadra ji. It is also known as Subhadra Bhai Phota (Sister Day). On this
day, people from all communities come to pay their respects to the great lady,
who is known for her patience, grace, kindness and knowledge. In addition to
all this, on this day, people from the region throw a new leaf into their life
by celebrating the richness of their culture and heritage. On this day, the
region celebrates its rich heritage and it also hopes to build its future
ahead.
